The primary purpose of this website is to serve as a source of news and information for the residents of DeLand and Volusia County regarding the status of remediation activities at the Sherwood Medical Industries Superfund Site (Site) located at 2010 East International Speedway Boulevard in DeLand, Florida.
Guiding Principles
Site investigation and remediation efforts at the Site are being performed under the direction of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), based upon these guiding principles:
- Site remediation will be protective of human health and the environment;
- Work will be in accordance with applicable laws and regulations;
- Safety is paramount; and,
- Community concerns and stakeholder input will be respected.
Current Status
Remedial construction activities were completed in 1992. Since that time, ongoing operations, maintenance and monitoring activities have been performed in accordance with the USEPA-approved remedies.
In 2019, measures were initiated to optimize and enhance soil and groundwater remediation performance. A new Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) System was installed to target a remaining area of focus. In addition, an enhanced bio-remediation program was implemented to optimize natural degradation of volatile organic compounds.
In October 2023, an engineered phytoremediation pilot program was initiated on Site. Ten (10) TreeWells were installed on the Site and poplar trees were planted within each TreeWell to take up groundwater from the aquifer and naturally breakdown the volatile organic compounds within the plant system. Groundwater will continue to be monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of this program. If successful, additional TreeWells and trees may be installed on the Site.
