Status

The remedial construction activities, as outlined in the Record of Decision, were completed in 1992. Since that time, ongoing operations, maintenance and monitoring activities have been performed in accordance with the USEPA-approved remedies.

Over the past several years, a number of additional subsurface environmental assessments were implemented to further refine and update the conceptual site model.

In 2019, additional measures to optimize and enhance soil and groundwater remediation performance were initiated. A Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) System was installed to target a remaining area of focus. In addition, an enhanced bio-remediation program was implemented to optimize natural degradation of volatile organic compounds. During this remedy optimization program, the surficial groundwater extraction system has been temporarily shut down to facilitate the enhanced bio-remediation activities.

In October 2023, an engineered phytoremediation pilot program was initiated on Site. Ten (10) TreeWells were installed on the Site and poplar trees were planted within each TreeWell to take up groundwater from the aquifer and naturally breakdown the volatile organic compounds within the plant system. Groundwater will continue to be monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of this program. If successful, additional TreeWells and trees may be installed on the Site.

Groundwater conditions on and off the Site are regularly monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the remedial actions. In addition, residential wells located east and north of the Site are monitored on a regular basis.

The Site is reviewed every five years by USEPA and FDEP to ensure the selected remedies remain protective of human health and the environment. The next five-year review is expected to be published by USEPA in 2025.
